👑 Who Am I? Understanding Identity, Clothing & Royal Priesthood

Let’s first reconnect quickly to some of the concepts of identity we have explored previously.

  • Identity and personality are not the same.
  • Identity is also shaped consciously & sub-consciously through people, experiences & perceptions.
  • Identity placed or taken by us can sometimes conflict with the way God sees us.

Identity is who you are, Personality is how you are (act/respond). Examples: you can be introvert, extrovert, logical or emotionally intelligent decision making or assertive or empathetic or both etc.. It is not the physical or external attributes of tall or short, rich or poor either.

👕 Why Clothing Matters : Identity can be externally expressed by clothing, just like personality.

Clothing can be very important to help identify a person.

Clothing can say a lot about who someone is and what they do. In a busy room, you can often spot a doctor, nurse, or lawyer just by what they’re wearing. Police officers and army personnel wear special gear that helps them do their job—and also shows what role they play.

Different cultures, religions, and schools also have unique outfits or uniforms. These help people feel connected and make it easier to know who’s part of what group.

đŸ§„ But Wait
Is Clothing Really Part of Who We Are?
It might sound a little vain, right? Especially since what we wear can change like when someone retires, or goes home after work, switches careers, or moves to a new place.
That’s the point: a lot of the clothing we wear reflects temporary roles or given identities.

A student wears a school uniform now, but won’t after graduation. Someone from one culture might dress differently if they move to another country. Clothing helps others understand our role or background, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

đŸ‘€ Who Am I, Really? What Does God Say About Me?

So our true identity goes deeper than what’s on the outside or even at some specific part of our living. To understand this we will take a deeper look through Bible – lens.

  • Are we born into a God-given identity or are we given that identity later?
  • Does Age matter?
  • Do we keep changing in our identity then?

Let’s dive into some scriptures that can help us understand this better.

Given identity to all humans – Before 1 day of age!

🌍 Created in God’s Image
We, as humans are not random. We are not a mistake. You were designed by God, on purpose—with care, creativity, and love.

Genesis 1:27 – “So God created mankind in His own image
male and female He created them.

Psalm 139:13-14 – “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Even before your body existed, God knew your name, your purpose, your story.

❀ Loved Deeply by God
God doesn’t just create humans and walk away. He loves us deeply! All of us – every human that has been born, is born, and will be born are all loved by God, who is not limited by time.

  • John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son
”
  • 1 John 3:16 – “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.”
God’s love is for everyone He created.

God Does Love Everyone !!!! – –

That includes your atheist friend.

Your neighbor who doesn’t believe.

The classmate who questions everything.

The person who’s angry at God.

The one who’s never even heard of Him.

But there’s a special relationship for those who believe.

So what is this special relationship and what is then a Given or received Identity – is it temporary?

👑 Adopted and Chosen

When you believe in Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit, something amazing happens—you’re adopted into God’s family.

  • Romans 8:15-17 – You’re no longer a slave to fear, but a child of God. And if you’re His child, you’re also a co-heir with Christ.
  • That means you share in His inheritance—His kingdom, His promises, His future.

đŸȘ‘ Seated in Heavenly Realms

if you have believed and received, then even now, your position has shifted. You’re not just surviving Earth you’re spiritually seated with Christ. Your current identity and your future destiny—to reign with Him! Not temporary but Permanent

  • Ephesians 2:6 – “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.”

💎 Royal Priesthood, Chosen Generation

God doesn’t just call you saved—He calls you special.

  • 1 Peter 2:9 – “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession
”
  • You’re chosen to reflect His light, show His mercy, and live with purpose.

💬 So What’s the Takeaway?

  • God loves everyone He created but those who believe in Jesus are adopted, sealed, and called into a deeper identity.
  • You’re not just a student, athlete, artist, or friend. You’re a child of God, a co-heir, a royal priest, and a citizen of heaven.

👗 Back to Clothing—With Deeper Meaning

In the Bible, priests wore special garments.
Royals wore robes and crowns.
Today, we may not wear literal robes, but our clothing as royal priesthood is just as real.

So yes—clothing can express personality and role.
But your true identity is what God says about you.

In the next blog we will now study this identity further as a royal priesthood! – does any examples of royalty or examples of priest come to mind?

Prayer:

Father God we thank you love us deeply and want us to grow closer to you. Help shape our identity. Speak to us deeply on this from your word. Help us also with our personalities, perceptions, talent, time and education. All of the relative identities we carry as well Lord we aim to serve you and grow in wisdom, understanding and skills. In Jesus name. Amen

PS: Clothing & accessories are important. Feel free to express your personalities in a way that honors your culture, profession or authority however remember that identity does not differentiate or elevate one above another. If you need help believing and receiving Christ, ask your local youth pastor or a trusted Christ follower in your life. We hope to create more resources on this to help them as well and to help you.
