Unknown, unsung
Her name meant God’s glory
And so was He glorified through her life!
With a Levitical backdrop
She knew and lived religion
She had heard of stories of God’s glory and mercy
But little did she know
She would see and know it so tangibly.
At a time when the promises seemed to be failing
And the burden of slavery hung strong
There was a deadly decree
To destroy all the male born
Where was her trust now?
At a time when people rejoiced and plotted to kill babies
By throwing into the Nile
And reliability was rare to find
How could she bring this child into this world?
Her heart ached but her faith held on
God must have a purpose!
She gave birth to this promise
Thus being a channel for the forthcoming of many prophecies
In the midst of suspicion and mistrust
She embraced courage
And made it her life mission to protect this very promise.
Kept out of sight of the searching soldiers and the eyes of the prying neighbours
She came to a point where she had to let go
Let it go into God’s hands.
She looked at the child and wept bitterly
She prayed for grace to let him go
And maybe someday she would see him again
With a heavy heart, she prepared a basket, laid it with reeds and waterproofed it
And put the baby in it to be floated in the Nile.
The very river that swallowed so many innocent babies before her
Carried the fate of her child now
Would the basket topple over and drown him
Or the crocodiles get to him first..
She dared to look past her fears
And trust the God who saves.
Just then, she was met with a surprise
The king’s daughter had got hold of him
Her anxious thoughts run wild
And she struggled to have faith
But she prayed harder than ever before
Then with a pleasant twist
She was called to nurse her own baby
And was paid for being his mother
How could she ever comprehend a God like this
Who turned the well of death
Into a life giving river
And protected the promise with more care than a mother.
How could she ever stop glorifying a God like this?
Rightly so, she was Jochebed.
And the glory she perceived that day was radiated through Moses,
That promised child, she watched grow…
